NHL Rumors: 2 Defensemen Named Trade Candidate For Oilers

Edmonton’s preseason has revealed real depth on defense, and that surplus is pushing Troy Stecher and Ty Emberson toward the trade conversation.

With Alec Regula forcing the issue after a strong camp and waiver risk hovering over multiple right-shot options, the Oilers are exploring ways to protect assets while shoring up needs at goalie, third line right wing, and possibly third line center.

The club likes Stuart Skinner and Calvin Pickard, yet outside help remains on the table, and any meaningful add will likely require moving from an area of strength.

Why Stecher and Emberson are in play

Both defenders are reliable NHL options on the right side, which general managers covet.

Emberson offers age and penalty killing value on a modest deal, and played regular minutes last season. Stecher brings experience, steady puck movement, and proven chemistry in various pairings, plus a contract that is easy to move.

Regula’s size and puck touch have complicated the picture, since sending him down would likely cost the Oilers an asset on waivers. That roster math is what elevates Stecher and Emberson as the most logical trade pieces.

What a deal might address

Up front, a two-way third line winger or a steady third line center would balance the lineup if internal options do not grab the job. Packaging one of Stecher or Emberson for a pick and cap space, then flipping futures for help, is a path the Oilers have used before when the roster is tight.

Risk and timing

Moving either defender would thin out injury insurance, and the staff still wants a longer look at pairings once everyone is healthy. That said, postponing the call increases waiver risk and limits leverage.

Edmonton’s best outcome is turning surplus on the right side into targeted help without touching the top four, protecting Regula from waivers, and keeping flexibility for a larger in-season move if the standings demand it.
