Roslovic Overestimated His Value, Still Winds Up With Oilers
Jack Roslovic had a solid 2024-25 season with the Carolina Hurricanes ahead of being a free agent this past summer. Scoring 22 goals and 39 points was a good showing in a contract year, but it didn't turn out the way he had hoped.
David Pagnotta said that, "(Roslovic) had, I think, a three-year offer on the table in the summer...from the Oilers, worth considerably more. I think it was in the $3 million AAV range. He thought he was getting a better deal somewhere else."
Roslovic was the latest, most notable free agent to sign this summer, and it took until after the season started for him to find his way back to the Edmonton Oilers, signing for just $1.5 million AAV on a one-year deal. It worked out for the Oilers and Roslovic has landed with a Stanley Cup contender, but not for the money that he was expecting and waiting for from potential offers from other teams.
After waiting a certain amount of time, it made sense for him to hold out until teams had players go down to injury early in the year. A few of them have, like the Florida Panthers with Aleksander Barkov, but whether there was a deal or not on the table for Roslovic from the Panthers, the Oilers got one of the players they were targeting earlier in the offense.
Roslovic hasn't gotten into a game for the Oilers yet as he is getting up to speed, but with Zach Hyman currently out of action, Roslovic will compete for a top-9 role. There is a lot of inner competition in Edmonton and not many are guaranteed every day playing time, but he could also shine and earn himself the contract he was hoping for for next summer as the cap continues to go up, as do the contracts.
