Canadiens Sign Lane Hutson To Big, Long-Term Extension

Lane Hutson, Montreal Canadiens
The Montreal Canadiens have locked up a very important piece in Lane Hutson for the next eight years, as he has signed three games into the final season of his entry-level deal.

The Canadiens sign their 21-year-old star defenseman after just one season in the NHL to an eight-year, $8.85 million AAV contract. This is interesting because the number is still lower than what Montreal had to settle on with Noah Dobson for eight years after acquiring him from the New York Islanders.

Dobson is signed at $9.5 million AAV and his deal started this season, so both will end one year apart in 2033 and 2034 as well. Hutson is the go-to on offense and should continue to be as he is on the top power play. Hutson has just one assist through three games of the 2025-26 season.

Hutson surprised as a rookie last season, showing everyone just how good he is offensively. He won the Calder Trophy after scoring six goals and 66 points, but also finished ninth in Norris Trophy voting as a rookie, which is rare.

With the cap going up significantly, this contract is already looking good for a top defenseman like Hutson has proven to be, at least offensively. So in a few years, the Canadiens are going to be set with a great contract for a defenseman not even in his prime yet as the team is coming close to competing for a Stanley Cup.
