Anaheim Ducks Are In Position To Add More Firepower
The Anaheim Ducks have come out of the gate swinging despite some struggles in net very early in the season. They have won four games in a row and are 8-3-1 on the season, leading the Pacific Division.
The Ducks traded away John Gibson to give Lukas Dostal the net, but also added Petr Mrazek, Chris Kreider, and Mikael Granlund to go with a handful of young guys all playing well. The Ducks seem to have taken a big, much-needed step even further forward from last season and are ready to get back into the playoffs and compete.
Darren Dreger said, "I think that (GM) Pat Verbeek isn't done. I think when the time is right, when the opportunity is there, he's going to find a way to add."
This is a team that is set up to be good for a long time and they currently have over $14 million in cap space to utilize this season. That could be on rentals or someone who will stick around for longer, whichever suits their lineup needs better as the team will still have plenty of cap space to use with big contracts coming off the board.
This seems like just the beginning of what the Ducks are going to be able to do. Given the cap situation, I think they could really go all-in this season if the play keeps up. There are plenty of young players playing well and the veterans fit in for a great mix of players.
I think that a forward would be the first addition made by the Ducks because there are some holes at the bottom of the lineup, especially if there are injuries. But a backup goaltender that is more effective than Mrazek could also be on the list of targets. The team has Ville Husso in the minors and he's playing well, but the Ducks wouldn't be comfortable playing either of them as the starter if Dostal were to get injured. Watch out for the Ducks to make a splash and continue to play well with a well-rounded team.
