NHL Rumors: Senators & Penguins Could Become Trade Partners

Ottawa Senators forward Fabian Zetterlund skates before 2025 game.

Sportsnet’s Alex Adams thinks there’s a path for the Ottawa Senators and Pittsburgh Penguins to become trade partners if timing breaks right.

Ottawa is aggressively looking to add another winger and a right-shot defenseman, but with no first-round pick and a thin prospect pool beyond Carter Yakemchuk and Logan Hensler, a trade built around roster players makes the most sense.

Why Ottawa’s Needs Match Pittsburgh’s Potential Surplus

Adams notes the Senators want immediate help in the top six and on the right side of the blue line. The Penguins’ strong start could pause talks now, but if Pittsburgh levels off or targets cap flexibility, both sides could explore a player-for-player deal that helps Ottawa now without costing futures.

Ottawa’s limited assets point toward swaps involving established NHLers rather than pick-heavy packages.

Names to Watch and the Hockey-Trade Angle

Asked about realistic trade candidates, Adams floated Fabian Zetterlund, Nick Jensen, and Dylan Cozens as examples of the “hockey trade” profile Ottawa could make. Zetterlund, signed at a $4.275 million AAV, hasn’t fit in a fourth-line role and could rebound in a new environment.

Jensen would stabilize a team's right side as a stopgap if Yakemchuk is ready, while Cozens represents a higher-end swing that would require significant value back, and is probably more unlikely.

If the Penguins enter the chat later this season, Ottawa’s needs and Pittsburgh’s depth could align for a potential move.
