3 Trade Destinations For Predators' Marchessault
The Nashville Predators are tied for second-last in the NHL and it doesn't look good moving forward. They have movable pieces and even if the standings are pretty close, they have to accept defeat and move on like the Vancouver Canucks are doing. To do that, one of the players that should be traded is Jonathan Marchessault.
Nick Kypreos said, "Jonathan Marchessault is...a guy that comes a lot cheaper than Stamkos, and I think there's a tremendous amount of appeal to add more scoring with a guy like that." Marchessault has three years left on his deal after this season at $5.5 million AAV. While Nashville could retain some of the salary as it has been done before with longer contracts or larger contracts, they could also take back a less ideal contract if they are getting futures in the trade. There are teams that would want a goal-scorer like Marchessault. He has had a tough time on the Predators, but prior to that on better teams, the veteran has had no problem scoring. Here are three of the top teams that could trade for Marchessault.
Boston Bruins
The Boston Bruins are back in the playoff mix after having a tough 2024-25 season. They are tied for first in the Atlantic Division at 38 points in 31 games and have been getting surprise contributions throughout the lineup. This magic will likely not last all season, so upgrades are needed. Someone like Marchessault can help the retooling work better, and the Bruins would be able to afford him if they moved some money out this season. Marchessault would make a questionable top-9 look a whole lot better if one of their depth pieces were shifted down. It would give the team another player who can score beyond David Pastrnak and Morgan Geekie.
Detroit Red Wings
The Detroit Red Wings are sitting nicely this season with a ton of cap space to spend while in a playoff spot. Going after a scoring winger for the top-9 with the cap hit of Marchessault won't hurt the team's chances of also targeting a defenseman either. At the same time, it would give the Red Wings an opportunity to trade Jonatan Berggren and finally give him a better shot in an NHL lineup in Nashville, which should be going the younger route.
San Jose Sharks
The San Jose Sharks sit in a playoff spot to many people's surprise, but the young players have taken a step forward at the same time to get them there. The forward depth is not good and whether the Sharks think they can make the playoffs this season or not, adding a veteran like Marchessault for the next three seasons after this one adds much-needed money to the cap as well as gets the team a player who can contribute to the success. Think of him as a Tyler Toffoli type and the Sharks can afford to give up an asset or two to bring Marchessault in at this point in their rebuild that has seemingly ended.
