Canucks place Elias Pettersson on IR, activate newcomer Marco Rossi

The Vancouver Canucks made a couple more moves on Sunday, however, both of them were internal transactions.

The Canucks announced they've placed Elias Pettersson on injured reserve, and they've also activated Marco Rossi ahead of their game against the New Jersey Devils. Pettersson hits the shelve thanks to an upper-body injury.

This will be Rossi's first game as a Canuck after heading to Vancouver in the Quinn Hughes blockbuster involving the Minnesota Wild. The Wild sent Rossi, Zeev Buium, Liam Ohgren, and a 2026 first-rounder, and all three players appear set to make their Canucks' debut on Sunday.

Pettersson hits the IR retroactive to Dec.5, and could return whenever he's ready to go. Pettersson traveled with the team on it's five-game road trip, so there's no doubt he's close to returning. The Canucks have gone 1-2-0 without Pettersson in their lineup, including losses to the Detroit Red Wings and Buffalo Sabres.

As for Rossi, he hasn't suited up since Nov.11 due to a lower-body injury. He blocked a shot back in October and it's lingered, causing him to miss some time. Rossi's appeared in 17 games this season, recording 13 points, and if he can become the second-line center the Canucks are desperate for, and Buium continues to bloom into one of the best young defencemen in the league, then there could be some hope left in Vancouver, after all.
