NHL Rumors: New Trade Suitor Emerges for Canucks' Kiefer Sherwood

Vancouver Canucks forward Kiefer Sherwood shoots the puck before 2025 game.

The Vancouver Canucks know exactly what they are sitting on with Kiefer Sherwood.

The 30 year old winger is having a career year, driving scoring and physicality, and that has turned the  Sherwood trade sweepstakes into one of the juiciest subplots of this deadline season as contenders circle.

Kiefer Sherwood trade market heats up with Islanders circling

With Kyle Palmieri lost for the season, the New York Islanders have been quickly linked to Sherwood as they search for a scoring right wing who can bring some edge.

Sherwood leads the Canucks with double digit goals, is on pace for a big career high, and ranks near the top of the league in hits, which fits exactly what Patrick Roy wants on Bo Horvat’s flank. Vancouver’s front office loves what he has brought but is wary of potential regression and knows his next contract could triple his current cap hit, which is why they are listening.

The internal belief is that a Kiefer Sherwood trade can fetch at least a first round pick and possibly another asset if a bidding war breaks out, and that is the kind of return a team in retool mode cannot ignore.

The Islanders are not alone in this conversation. Reports have the Boston Bruins, Buffalo Sabres and Detroit Red Wings all checking in on Sherwood, with other sources suggesting the Minnesota Wild and San Jose Sharks could join the mix as the deadline gets closer.

For the Canucks, the challenge is finding the sweet spot where they cash in on Sherwood’s peak value without stripping too much from a roster that still wants to stay competitive while getting younger.

As long as he keeps scoring, hitting and driving play, the trade rumors are going to keep flying until one team finally decides that a first round pick plus is a price worth paying.
