Kraken Could Trade Marchment Right Before Holiday Roster Freeze
The Seattle Kraken's season has not gone the way they'd hoped as they sit second last in the league and are 1-9-0 in their last 10 games. Being at the bottom of the standings and having a number of talented young players that are looking to break into the NHL, it only makes sense that the Kraken move out some players well ahead of the trade deadline.
Mason Marchment is a name that has been talked about and Frank Seravalli reported, "Kraken forward Mason Marchment has generated real traction on the trade market this week as we wind down to Friday's holiday roster freeze." There isn't much time, but for a team to acquire the veteran from Seattle before the roster freeze would give him some time to get settled before games resume.
Marchment has arguably been showcased on the top line recently with Matty Beniers and Jordan Eberle. The 30-year-old has four goals and 13 points in 29 games this season, but it's tougher to judge what he can fully do this season because we've only got a look at him on a bad team and a poor offensive team.
Marchment plays a little bit on the power play, but is also being leaned on a little more because regulars Jaden Schwartz, Jared McCann, and Berkley Catton are all injured. Marchment is in the final year of his deal at $4.5 million AAV. Seattle is going to have to retain some of his cap hit if they are going to trade him, and I don't think that is a big issue.
Marchment would fit well on a contender's third line as he can play physically and is a solid two-way player as well. Mix that in with his ability to score as he recorded at least 22 goals and 47 points in each of the past two years on a better team. The Kraken won't get a first round pick for Marchment, but with retention, his value could be pushed as high as a second rounder. It makes all the sense for the Kraken to move on from Marchment as he isn't a fit and the team needs a reset with other players getting opportunities.
