Maple Leafs Still Looking to Add While Trading 2 Forwards
The Toronto Maple Leafs are not in a good place right now, and if things don't start to change for the better, there will be more changes, probably starting with the head coach and not just assistant coach Marc Savard.
Toronto is one game over .500, sit second last in the Eastern Conference in a tight race where every team is at least .500, and are five points back of a playoff spot after their latest win. But the Maple Leafs have lost five of their past seven games and have been inconsistent this season.
In terms of changes to the roster, something has to be done. David Pagnotta said, "Toronto continues to look for a top-6 addition - along with half the league and in addition to Max Domi, whose name is still floating out there, Mattias Maccelli is also available."
Maccelli sitting for over 10 straight games in the press box clearly indicates that the Maple Leafs thought they had better options on their roster than playing him, but after waiting that long, he came back to the lineup with a vengeance and scored while playing over 16 minutes in a win.
Domi also scored, but one game doesn't change the way things have gone for both of them this season, and prior for Domi. He hadn't scored in the 23 games prior to getting on the board, and in just year two of his four-year deal, is not living up to his contract.
While at least one of Domi or Maccelli should be in the top-6, they both currently are. This isn't a long-term solution or a solution the Maple Leafs should have if they want to climb back into the race. With Matthew Knies on the third line, it deepens the forward group, but Toronto needs another legitimate top-6 player to be brought in and change the dynamic. This would have to involve moving one of Domi or Maccelli. The latter is easier, and trades have been going on around the NHL, but the Maple Leafs have stood pat so far, which isn't the path they should be taking during this season.
