Breaking: More Devastating News for Canucks & Thatcher Demko

Vancouver Canucks goalie Thatcher Demko

As if things weren't already bad enough for the Vancouver Canucks this year, they've now learned that goaltender Thatcher Demko is officially done for the season. He'll be undergoing hip surgery.

Demko saw several medical specialists before coming up with the latest diagnosis and treatment plan.

“After consulting with our team doctors and outside specialists, Thatcher Demko will be shut down for the rest of the year,” said GM Patrik Allvin. “Thatcher will undergo surgery next week for an injury unrelated to the one that kept him out of action last season. Following his rehab, he will be ready for the start of training camp in September.”

Demko last played over two weeks ago, on Jan. 10.  In 20 games this season, he posted an 8-10-0 record with a 2.90 goals-against average, an .897 save percentage, and one shutout.

He missed a month earlier this season with another injury.

The 6'4" netminder only played 23 games last season as well due to a rare popliteus injury — a muscle at the back of the knee.

In his last healthy season, 2023-24, Demko was runner-up for the Vezina Trophy, as he had a .918 save percentage and 2.45 GAA.

He signed a three-year, $25.5 million extension with the Canucks this summer that will keep him with the team through the 2028-29 season.
