New, Surprising Team to Watch in Kiefer Sherwood Sweeptakes
The Kiefer Sherwood Sweepstakes are coming down to the final days. It would be a surprise to many around the Vancouver Canucks if the hard-nosed forward isn't traded before the Olympic Roster Freeze on Feb. 4.
Plenty of teams around the NHL have interest in the league's 'Hit King', but now we're hearing a new, surprising club being linked to Sherwood, courtesy of Canucks insider Rick Dhaliwal.

“I was told to keep an eye on San Jose and Sherwood," said Dhaliwal. "They got the picks, they got the prospects, they got the cap space to get a deal done and maybe an extension as well.
"San Jose’s got multiple first- and second-round picks this year. San Jose’s in a playoff spot right now. What better way to reward that group than adding a player like Sherwood? I’m not saying Sherwood and San Jose’s done. I’m saying keep an eye on the Sharks. I think they’re a team that would like to swing for the fences and get him.”
What the Sharks could offer the Canucks for Sherwood
The Sharks are 7-3-0 in their last 10 games, and hold down the second Wild Card spot in the Western Conference going into Saturday's play. Adding a gritty, physical forward like Sherwood who can also contribute on the score sheet (17 goals) would be a nice boost to this young group.
But to get it done, Dhaliwal warns that the Canucks need to be "realistic" in their ask from the Sharks (or any other team).
"Sure, they would love a first-rounder, but playoff-bound teams are waiting to use their first-rounders on guys like [Nazem] Kadri, [Artemi] Panarin, Connor Murphy, [Pavel] Zacha, [Robert] Thomas, [Jordan] Kyrou, [Brayden] Schenn and Rasmus Andersson. There’s a lot of guys ahead of Sherwood in terms of teams willing to move a first-round pick for."
He suggests a second-rounder and a prospect could get it done. The Sharks do have two second-rounders in this year's draft.
Tyson Cole of Canucks Army proposes a number of Sharks prospects that GM Patrik Allvin could target, including forwards Quentin Musty, Filip Bystedt, Cam Lund and Kasper Halttunen, and blueliners Luca Cagnoni, Haoxi Wang, and Leo Sahlin-Wallenius.
