Rangers Trade Rumors: Alexis Lafreniere available in trade talks

The New York Rangers are open for business, which could mean some significant changes are coming to the core of their roster. First things first, they made it clear to Artemi Panarin they won't be offering him a contract extension, so he's priority number one on the trade market, however, don't be surprised to see general manager Chris Drury put a former number one overall draft pick on the table.

Word is, Drury is open to offers on Alexis Lafreniere, and there's growing speculation throughout the league, that teams feel he's the perfect change of scenery trade candidate, who could pop off with new threads, and a new city. Lafreniere, 24, is signed through the 2032 season at $7.4 million AAV, and the only element of surprise for some here, is the fact his trade protection doesn't kick in until the 2027 season.

Lafreniere, like many Rangers has struggled this season, posting 10 goals, and 28 points in 50 games. He's yet to fully reach his potential and while there's been flashes of brilliance, he's nowhere near reached the level of dominance many were expecting as a top pick.

Kyle Bukauskas: Re Rangers: Do you think they would look at a guy like Alexis Lafreniere with how things are going there? Elliotte Friedman: I do think they would look at that - 32 Thoughts (1/19)

The Rangers continue to work the phones, as it's not often a GM sends out a statement to their fanbase in season to let everyone know moves are coming. Trade talks have picked up in a major way since, and Drury met with several members of the Rangers core the past couple of days to keep them in the loop about trade conversations.

Expect to see a wide range of teams in play for Lafreniere, including the Anaheim Ducks, Detroit Red Wings, Vancouver Canucks, Seattle Kraken and Carolina Hurricanes.
