3 Montreal Canadiens Trade Targets Post Olympic Break
The Montreal Canadiens are expected to be aggressive buyers ahead of this season's NHL trade deadline. The Habs have burst onto the scene this season and if they can put it all together, at the right time, there's a legit shot we see Montreal win a playoff round this spring.
Ahead of the trade deadline Mar.6, general manager Kent Hughes is going to make a couple of moves, and word is, Hughes has been making calls, looking for a top-six right winger. There's speculation that the team is willing to include Patrik Laine in trade talks, as his $8.7 million cap hit will help balance out the finances of the deal.
Here's three trade targets who may wind up in Montreal post Olympic break:
Jordan Kyrou
The St. Louis Blues are open to re-tooling on the fly, and could fetch a hefty return from the Canadiens, who happen to have the best farm system in the league. Kyrou's had an up and down couple of last seasons with the Blues, and there's plenty of chatter he's open to a change of scenery. Kyrou's signed through the 2031 season at $8.1 million AAV, and controls his own destiny with a no-trade clause. Many expect he'd be open to moving on to Montreal for the next chapter of his career.
Jake DeBrusk
DeBrusk has fallen out of favor in Vancouver, and could bring an element of size and scoring to the Canadiens. He's versatile to play either wing position and can slot in on either line of the top-six, bringing serious postseason experience under his belt. DeBrusk is available, he's been healthy scratched at certain points of this season, and he's a long-term option being under contract through the 2031 season at a reasonable $5.5 million AAV. DeBrusk has a no-move clause, but is open to joining a playoff team this season, and who better to join than one of the Boston Bruins' oldest rivals.
Jonathan Marchessault
The Nashville Predators have been one of the strangest teams to follow this season as they struggled out of the gate, they made all their veterans available on the trade market, their GM stepped down, they're just four points out of a playoff spot, and are still going to be active re-tooling. Marchessault is top priority for the Preds to move and talks have been active. Montreal has serious interest and is one of the only teams Marchessault is open to joining. Don't be surprised to see these two teams link up for a pre-deadline deal.
