3 Chicago Blackhawks Who Could Be Traded This Week
After the Chicago Blackhawks traded defenceman Connor Murphy to the Edmonton Oilers for a second-round pick, trade talks continue in the windy city.
GM Kyle Davidson isn't going to be shy as he continues to look for ways to fast track his rebuild, and get Connor Bedard and company closer to the playoff picture, as soon as next season. The Blackhawks are going to sell ahead of 3pm on Friday and here's who could be involved.
Ilya Mikheyev
Mikheyev is as fast as they come on the wing, and as a pending unrestricted free-agent, there's going to be contending teams interested in adding the speedy Russian to their bottom six. Mikheyev has posted 11 goals and 23 points in 55 games this season, averaging 17:35 of ice-time, including a ton on the penalty kill. The Blackhawks are among the league's best PK teams, so Mikheyev is a huge asset, and will land Davidson a decent prospect in return.
Sam Lafferty
Another grinder, Lafferty is versatile to play down the middle or on the wing within a third, or fourth line. At just $2 million against the cap, Davidson will retain 50% of Lafferty's contract, much like he did with Murphy, and would do with Mikheyev as well. Lafferty doesn't hold a ton of trade value, so the salary retention will be mandatory. Don't expect much more than a late draft pick in return in a Lafferty deal.
Matt Grzelcyk
The veteran defenceman has had a good year in Chicago, after having to settle for a PTO to training camp and turning it into a one-year deal. At just $1 million against the cap, there's going to be interest in the smooth-skating defenceman. Don't be surprised to see the Pittsburgh Penguins circle back here.
Keep an eye on the Blackhawks, they're in the selling market and Mikheyev is very likely on the radar of a number of contending teams.
