Another Hutson Is On His Way To NHL: Capitals Sign Cole Hutson

Washington Capitals defenseman Lane Hutson

Reigning Calder Trophy winner Lane Hutson will have yet another brother to contend with in the NHL, as the Washington Capitals are officially signing his young brother Cole to an entry-level contract.

It’s a three-year, $2.925 million deal, with a $975,000 AAV.

Cole Hutson, a 5'10" defenseman, was the Caps' second-round pick in the 2024 NHL Draft (43rd overall), and is a very similar player to his electrifying brother for the Montreal Canadiens. In fact, Cole even broke some of Lane's scoring records at the U.S. National Team Development Program.

Cole Hutson's sophomore season with Boston University came to an end on Saturday, making him eligible to sign his first pro contract. He posted 10 goals and 22 assists for 32 points in 35 games for the Terriers. Yes, that certainly sounds like Lane Hutson-type production. His freshman season with BU was even better, in fact, with 48 points in 39 games. He leads all NCAA blueliners in points over the last two years.

Like Lane, 19-year-old Cole Hutson is clearly a premier playmaker, a skilled, puck-moving, offensive defenseman. He, too, is also a high-end power-play quarterback.

Cole Hutson becomes the third Hutson brother to join the pro ranks

A third brother in the pro ranks, Quinn, is a forward in the Edmonton Oilers system, and is also a high-scoring player with a strong offensive game. He's the elder of the three, at 24 years old. He was undrafted, and also played his college hockey at Boston U.

Quinn Hutson has had a strong season with the Bakersfield Condors of the AHL, the Oilers' affiliate, scoring 26 goals and adding 24 assists for 50 points in 54 games thus far in his first full pro season. He's had four games up with the Oilers as well this campaign and has one goal.
