NHL Rumors: Bruins Pursuing Blockbuster Trade With Flyers

The Boston Bruins refuse to quit one name as the deadline gets closer: Owen Tippett.

According to Daily Faceoff’s Anthony Di Marco, Boston has checked in on the Philadelphia Flyers winger multiple times this season, and while Philadelphia is not trying to move him, they are at least willing to listen if the offer hits a serious level.

Bruins interest in Owen Tippett keeps getting louder

It is not hard to see why the Bruins keep poking around.

Tippett is 27, plays with speed, and has the kind of shot Boston has been chasing for its middle six. He has 19 goals and 36 points through 58 games this season, putting him right in that reliable 25-goal scorer who can play with pace that teams crave in playoff-style hockey.

Tippett is behind only Connor McDavid this year in 22+ MPH bursts with 39. McDavid has 112.

The Bruins see him as a different look than what they currently have, and Di Marco’s reporting suggests they've been eyeing him for quite a while now.

Tippett broke out in the 2022-23 season, recording 27 goals and 49 points across 77 games in that season. He then followed it up with a 28-goal and 53-point season the year after.

The Flyers rewarded Tippett with an 8-year, $49.6M contract in the middle of the 2024 season, and since then, he's struggled to replicate those numbers.

Tippett then looked poised to hit the 30-goal mark for the first time in his career last year, but disappointingly recorded just 20 goals and 43 points over 77 games. It's been a similar story this year, too, as the 27-year-old has 19 goals and 36 points through 59 games played.

Flyers will talk Owen Tippett only for a real return

Tippett is signed long-term on an eight-year extension with a $6.2 million cap hit that runs through 2031-32, which is exactly why the Flyers are not eager to move him unless the package is overwhelming. The potential is still there, of course, and you see him flash it often, it's just a matter of consistency.

Di Marco’s reporting has tied Boston’s prospect pool to the conversation, with names like Matthew Poitras, Dean Letourneau, and Mason Lohrei popping up as pieces Philadelphia would like in a potential deal.

The Bruins would likely be willing to trade any of those names, except Letourneau, in a trade for Tippett.

Boston is hunting for scoring and wants a forward who is not just a rental, while Philadelphia is trying to build properly and will not gift a conference rival a prime-age winger on a long deal.

Tippett was drafted 10th overall by the Florida Panthers in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. The Panthers traded Tipppett in 2022 to the Flyers.

The Flyers received Tippett, a 2024 first-round pick, and a 2023 third-round pick in the deal. The Panthers received Claude Giroux, forward prospects Connor Bunnaman, German Rubtsov, and a 2024 fifth-round pick in exchange.
