Chicago Blackhawks trading Connor Murphy to Edmonton Oilers

The Chicago Blackhawks are on the verge of trading defenceman Connor Murphy to the Edmonton Oilers.

Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman was first to report the move, as the Oilers have been in discussion for weeks trying to land some help for the right side of their blueline.

Murphy, 32, is a pending unrestricted free agent, earning $4.4 million AAV. Considering the Oilers have basically no cap space, it's expected the Blackhawks will be retaining a significant amount of Murphy's remaining contract for the rest of this season. It will be interesting to see if Andrew Mangiapane will be a part of the deal, and prospect Beau Akey.

The Blackhawks have several trade candidates who are going to be moved this week, as it's been another disappointing season in the windy city, and they'll continue to cash in on their trade assets.

As far as the Oilers go, Murphy fills a huge void for them on the back end, and they'll try to land a third-line center before 3pm on Friday. Murphy's averaged 16:34 of ice-time per game this season, including on the Blackhawks number-one penalty kill unit. He's also landed 62 hits and has blocked 87 shots.

Blackhawks and Oilers making moves, it's going to be a wild week - buckle up!
