Detroit Red Wings Rejected Multiple Trade Offers
Steve Yzerman stood his ground as Detroit Red Wings general manager ahead of this season's trade deadline.
Even though there was massive pressure on the Red Wings' GM to make a splash, or two, Yzerman kept declining trade offers that included sending any of his top three prospects out of town.
Anthony Di Marco: Speaking with one executive whose team had trade discussions with Yzerman...the Red Wings were not willing to move any of their top prospects...Nate Danielson and goaltenders Sebastian Cossa and Trey Augustine in any prospective trade - Daily Faceoff (3/20)
The Red Wings are loaded with young goaltending talent, as Cossa and Augustine are two of the best prospects in the league. With Detroit having aging netminders in John Gibson and Cam Talbot, it makes a ton of sense that Yzerman kept a strangle hold on keeping both in their system.
Detroit was linked to a few different players ahead of the trade deadline, but preferred to send a top draft pick and b-level prospect, instead of any of their top guns. Yzerman was in on Nazem Kadri, Steven Stamkos, Ryan O'Reilly, and even Elias Pettersson, who could be someone the team circles back on this summer. They'll ask the Canucks to retain a large chunk of Pettersson's contract, but if it ends up traded this summer, look for Detroit to be heavily in the running.
Last season Yzerman sat on his hands ahead of the trade deadline, and captain Dylan Larkin called him out for it. This season, Yzerman wouldn't give up any of his top prospects, and wound up adding offensive defenceman Justin Faulk as his prized jewel,
Was it enough? 11 games remain, the Wings are one point of the playoffs. Looks like time will tell.
