NHL Rumors: Devils to Move Simon Nemec for Top-Six Scorer

The New Jersey Devils could be one of the most aggressive teams this offseason, and Simon Nemec may be the centerpiece of a blockbuster move.

According to reports from Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic and James Nichols of New Jersey Hockey Now, the Devils are open to moving the former No. 2 overall pick if it helps significantly upgrade their top-six forward group.

New Jersey explored that possibility before the trade deadline but ultimately held onto Nemec after their high asking price was not met.

The Devils reportedly wanted a young, impact top-six forward in return, and that level of deal simply never materialized before the deadline. However, league insiders believe those conversations are far more likely to resurface this summer.

Nemec certainly didn't hurt his value with his performance at the Olympics either, serving as Team Slovakia's No. 1 defenseman in the tournament.

Devils Could Use Simon Nemec to Upgrade Top Six

Nichols reports that Devils general manager Tom Fitzgerald made it clear after the deadline that the organization is looking for ways to improve its forward group, even if it means dealing from a position of strength on defense.

“We have seven NHL everyday players on our back end,” Fitzgerald explained after the deadline. “Trying to shake one of those loose here in the offseason will be my goal, maybe to give us some help up front. Maybe a top-six winger or something.”

Nemec, 22, could be the most attractive trade chip available. The former second-overall-pick defenseman has taken a noticeable step forward during the 2025-26 season, showing flashes of top-pairing potential while contributing timely offense and strong puck-moving ability.

The 22-year-old has recorded nine goals, 21 total points, a +2 plus/minus rating, 69 blocked shots, and 14 hits across 50 games played.

Contract Situation Adds Pressure to Nemec Decision

Another factor complicating Nemec’s future in New Jersey is his upcoming contract situation.

The young defenseman is set to become a restricted free agent this summer after completing his entry-level contract, and Nichols reports that his camp may look to Luke Hughes’ seven-year, $9 million contract as a comparable during negotiations.

That potential salary range could make the Devils think twice about committing long-term when their biggest roster need remains scoring support in the top six.

Ideally, Nichols thinks New Jersey would prefer to move veteran defenseman Dougie Hamilton instead. However, Hamilton’s $9 million cap hit and upcoming $7.4 million signing bonus have made a trade difficult.

Because of that, many around the league believe Nemec could ultimately become the piece used to land the offensive upgrade the Devils have been searching for.
