Macklin Celebrini Opens Up About His Sharks’ Future

San Jose Sharks Macklin Celebrini celebrates a goal

There was no sophomore jinx for Macklin Celebrini. That's an understatement. The 19-year-old San Jose Sharks forward had one of the great sophomore seasons of all-time in the NHL in 2025-26. With just one year to run on his entry-level contract, he's eligible for an extension this summer.

He's already being asked about his long-term future in San Jose, and Celebrini has made it clear that he sees a long and illustrious relationship for himself and the Sharks, indicating that a new extension could be coming soon:

"I want to commit to this team and being here. I love it here," Celebrini said, per Sheng Peng of San Jose Hockey Now. But whether that's a long-term deal or a shorter-term deal, he said he hasn't decided yet.

Insider Elliotte Friedman reported on his 32 Thoughts podcast this past week that an extension for Celebrini this summer could fall into either the three-year or five-year range.  “I'm gonna say that they're not gonna screw around... I think they go at it hard. To me, the question is not so much the number, it’s the term. I can’t see him or his representatives…wanting to go eight years or seven years. "

Celebrini extension this summer could be for 3 or 5 years

That's understandable, with the cap continuing to soar to insane year-over-year levels. Four years is not a term they would do, as that would walk him right into his free agency years, says Friedman. Three years would leave him still as an RFA at expiry, while five would buy out one year of unrestricted free agency.

As for what those numbers could come in at? Peng reports that "agents who spoke to The Athletic" suggest that a three-year extension "could land anywhere in the ballpark of $10 million to $12 million per season." On a five-year deal? We might be looking at $14 million to $15 million annually.

With 45 goals and 115 points in 82 games, Celebrini was an insane 56 points better than the Sharks' second-leading scorer, Will Smith.
