NHL Rumors: 3 Free-Agent Destinations for Blue Jackets’ Charlie Coyle
The Columbus Blue Jackets' push for a playoff spot is officially over, as they have officially been eliminated from contention. Now, they are facing a big offseason and have multiple pending UFAs. One of them is Charlie Coyle, who has 20 goals and 58 points in 81 games this season.
If Coyle ends up not re-signing with the Blue Jackets and tests the market after his strong campaign, he will generate plenty of interest. Due to this, let's look at three teams that could target Coyle if he becomes a free agent.
Boston Bruins
Could a reunion between the Bruins and Coyle be in the cards? There is no question that he was a major part of their top nine during his time with the Black and Gold, and they could use more secondary production. Coyle's ability to play both center and right wing could make him a nice pickup for the Bruins again. This is especially so if the East Weymouth, Massachusetts native is willing to take a bit of a hometown discount.
Detroit Red Wings
The Red Wings need to improve at the center position this summer. With Coyle being one of the best centers who can hit the free agent market this year, it would make sense if they targeted Coyle. He would offer them an upgrade over Andrew Copp at their second-line center spot, which is a real need for Detroit.
Edmonton Oilers
The Oilers should be on the hunt for a third-line center this offseason, and Coyle would be a great option for them. He would give the Oilers' third line some much-needed offense and would also work on both their penalty kill and power play if acquired.
