Report: Calgary Flames Rejected Toronto Maple Leafs Trade Offer
The Calgary Flames traded defenceman Rasmus Andersson to the Vegas Golden Knights this season, however, there were a number of teams who made trade offers, including the Toronto Maple Leafs.
According to reports, the Maple Leafs made a trade offer for Andersson, which included prospect Ben Danford and at least one draft pick, however, Flames GM Craig Conroy rejected Brad Treliving's trade proposal and countered with two first-round picks and top prospect Easton Cowan.
Darren Dreger: I believe the Flames wanted two 1sts and Easton Cowan for Rasmus Andersson
Treliving had no interest moving Cowan for a potential rental, as Andersson doesn't have a contract heading into the summer. Cowan's also shown he's going to be a legit top-six forward, so the Maple Leafs were wise to hold onto him, which certainly isn't how you'd describe Treliving's tenure in Toronto, as he's since been fired.
Looking ahead to the summer, the Flames are hoping for a top-three pick and are certainly going to be active on the trade market this summer trying to find a home for veteran overpriced winger Jonathan Huberdeau.
As for the Maple Leafs, they're on the verge of hiring Mike Gillis and Mats Sundin to run their front office, and have some major decisions to make this offseason. The Leafs won't be rebuilding from scratch, but there's certainly a retool of sorts coming. Their biggest holes on their roster are right winger for Auston Matthews, third-line center and at least three new defencemen. Lots of work to do, no doubt about it.
Flames and Maple Leafs couldn't come to a deal during the season, but perhaps they'll continue conversations this summer. Would Huberdeau at 50% retained interest the Maple Leafs?
