Landing Spots for Red Wings' Sebastian Cossa

The Detroit Red Wings fell short of the playoffs this season, and as a result, the Yzerplan is in question.

As a team that started off hot at the beginning of the year, and ended the regular season 41-31-10, and 6th in the Atlantic Division. A fall from grace that earned backlash from the fans and disdain for general manager Steve Yzerman's "Yzerplan", which fell apart at the seams.

The team will need to sell in order to get more "win-now" pieces, and one player who could net a decent return is Sebastian Cossa.

Cossa, selected 15th overall in 2021, was part of a record-setting Grand Rapids Griffins team during the 2025-26 season in the AHL.

There was a belief that Cossa had earned a spot in the NHL with his stellar play this year, with a record of 26-8-4, 2.33 goals against average, and a .915 save percentage

Considering how poorly Cam Talbot did at the tail end of the year, Cossa should've been given a look in the NHL again. Instead, it appears that Cossa could be next on the trade block.

The going rate for a 1st-round goalie who helped backstop his team to the Calder Cup playoffs? A 2nd-round pick.

All GM Steve Yzerman is asking for Cossa, an NHL-ready goalie, is a 2nd-round pick. Who are some teams that could use someone like Cossa in their net?

Edmonton Oilers

The Oilers have been linked to Cossa before, and with Stan Bowman's failure to put a solid goaltending duo behind Connor McDavid, he might be their next best bet. They have their 2026 and 2027 2nd-round picks

Could this be a deal that happens at the draft?

San Jose Sharks

While the Sharks found limited success with Alex Nedeljkovic this season, with a record of 18-14-4, 2.87 GAA, and a .896 SV%, he doesn't fit their timeline.

He's been a serviceable backstop for Yaroslav Askarov, who put on showstopping performances this year against some of the best teams in the league. However, the team is building for the future, and at age 23, Cossa could end up being a 1B style of goalie next to Askarov (think Jeremy Swayman and Linus Ullmark in Boston).

Of course, this is all speculation, but as the draft draws nearer, we could see teams executing their postseason strategy ahead of free agency.
