Yzerman Is Blunt & Frank About Red Wings Offseason Goals

Steve Yzerman, general manager of the Detroit Red Wings, made it perfectly clear on where things stand with his team heading into the offseason at his end-of-year press conference. All it took was four words:

We need better players.

But Stevie Y. didn't leave it there. He expanded on that a bit, in particular addressing the forward group.

“The most obvious would be we need better players. We need to improve in particular areas, goal scoring, particularly five-on-five.” Making some bold additions to the top six is an obvious target.

David Pagnotta said on Daily Faceoff Live after Yzerman's news conference that what he takes out of it, is that the Red Wings "are going to try to make a bit of a splash here this summer." He pointed out that they tried to throw their hat in the ring on the Quinn Hughes sweepstakes earlier this year, and other star players around the league.

"They want to address offence," confirmed Pagnotta. "They were pressing hard to bring in a top-six guy. They've got a good pool of assets now that they can take the next steps with, and also package up to bring in some immediate help for this club in order to take that next step.

"They will be aggressive this offseason... They want to bring in more potency to that lineup... They're just not deep enough."

As for any questions about Yzerman's job, the Detroit GM isn't worried about any of that.

“I don’t think I’m just going to sit and hope for the best,” Yzerman said. “I’m very disappointed how this season played out. … We sit here today in the same spot we have for the last seven years. It needs to take some time…I speak with Chris [Ilitch] regularly throughout the course of the season, and he’s on top of everything. He’s aware of everything that’s going on. I intend to do my job to the best of my ability, to address the areas that need to, and intend to see this through.”
