Pending UFA Troy Stecher Speaks Out On His Future With Maple Leafs

Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman Troy Stecher
When the Toronto Maple Leafs claimed Troy Stecher on waivers from the Edmonton Oilers back in November, it was sort of a "break glass in case of emergency" situation, as Toronto needed to add some defensive depth with the team being riddled with injuries to their blueline.

But Stecher immediately grew into a crucial, valued member of the Leafs' defense corps. His high level of compete and tenacity earned him significant ice time in the top-four, while averaging over 20 minutes of ice time per game for much of his time in Toronto.

Eventually, he slid down the depth chart a bit by the end of the season at times, and even earned the occasional healthy scratch (though nothing like the 11 benchings in 17 games he received by the Oilers before they waived him).

Now it appears that Stecher and the Leafs are looking at potentially extending their relationship. The pending unrestricted free agent appeared on Leafs Morning Take on Wednesday and reiterated his desire to return.

“I hope I’m back, I really enjoyed being a Leaf," Stecher told Nick Alberga. He said that preliminary conversations have gotten underway between the new Leafs management and Stecher’s camp, though he's not sure to what degree the talks have progressed.

Stecher wants to return to Toronto, but is unsure of his future

But then you hear him talk about his time in Toronto in the past tense, and you wonder.

"It was great, I have really fond memories of playing there. Who knows what's going to happen here in the offseason with all the changes," said Stecher.

He added that he was disappointed when he heard that head coach Craig Berube was fired. "At the end of the day, the onus is on the players, and we as a group failed... and unfortunately he's the fall guy."

Stecher instantly gained attention when he arrived with the struggling Leafs after coming from the stumbling Oilers, with his iconic comment. He was asked about how he feels walking 'into the fire' with Toronto, and his response was "I just left the fire," refering to the Oilers.

We'll have to wait a bit longer to see if there are still any logs on the fire of a Stecher/Leafs reunion.
