Report: Sharks Have Trade Interest in Maple Leafs' Defenceman

Keep an eye on the Toronto Maple Leafs and San Jose Sharks this offseason as trade winds are swirling.

There's been multiple reports surfacing that the two teams have discussed a potential summer trade that involves defenceman Morgan Rielly. The longest-tenured Maple Leaf does hold a no-movement clause, however is rumored to be open to deals on the west coast.

Frank Seravalli: Re Morgan Rielly: This is a very movable player; consider a team like the Sharks for instance, two NHL defensemen under contract - Big Show (5/22)

Rielly, 32, has four seasons left on his contract at $7.5 million AAV and he's essentially become the fanbases scape goat this past season. Rielly was on the ice for more even strength goals than anyone in the league and his declining defensive abilities are certainly a cause for concern for Leafs Nation.

The Sharks on the other hand, only have two defenceman signed to NHL contracts for next season and they are nowhere near the salary floor, so not only do they need to add substantial contracts this summer, they need blueliners.

David Pagnotta: Re Morgan Rielly/Maple Leafs: He's got a full no-move so he'll dictate where he wants to go; the belief is it's out west...but I don't think it's exclusive to that - Oilersnation Everyday (5/20)

The Sharks and Maple Leafs won't be discussing the first, or second overall picks in this trade, but Rielly could be moved for a mid-level prospect and second-round pick. At this point the Leafs just need to get rid of his contract and free up some more financial flexibility as they look for a first-line right winger, and second-line center, and two mobile defenceman.
