NHL Rumors: Blackhawks Exploring Trade Market For Veteran Defenseman
He traded Connor Murphy away and expected the all-24-or-younger group behind him to handle the load.
They clearly could not.
"We wanted to see how it went," Davidson said at the NHL Draft Combine this week. "We're certainly engaged in trying to be aggressive and seeing what we can do to help the group because we believe in the group as currently constructed."
Per Ben Pope of the Chicago Sun-Times, a veteran defenseman is one of Chicago's primary trade targets this offseason, with a left-shot profile identified as the most logical fit given the current makeup of the roster.
Davidson added that finding that player will likely require a trade rather than free agency, an indication that he is already making calls with assets in hand.
Why the Need Is Real
The Blackhawks finished 29-39-14 and last in the Central Division yet again, but the forward group around Connor Bedard has generated enough excitement that the rebuild's timeline feels compressed in a way that was not anticipated two years ago.
Anton Frondell, Oliver Moore, Ryan Greene, and Sam Rinzel are all either NHL-ready or approaching it.
The defensive group is deep in terms of volume but lacks the veteran anchor who can provide structure, some leadership, and consistent top-four minutes alongside the developing younger pieces.
This is exactly what I was talking about in the Montreal series, where Montreal needed to adjust.

Look at Rasmus Andersson coming down low with speed. Look at the space he creates on his defender (#28 Carrier) off a late reaction to the switch or stay.

As Daily Faceoff's Steven Peters noted, Chicago has seven or eight defensemen all under 25 who could be everyday NHL players, which creates the dual reality of real depth and real redundancy.
"You don't need eight of them," Peters said. "So not only are they expendable, they are valuable assets."
That surplus of young defensive assets gives Davidson the trade currency to acquire the veteran presence he is looking for without depleting the forward pipeline that is the organization's true building block.
The Assets and the Candidates
Kevin Korchinski and Wyatt Kaiser have both been identified by Daily Faceoff as potential pieces in an outgoing package, with Ethan Del Mastro also mentioned as a possible sweetener depending on the deal.
Rasmus Andersson is a veteran target worth monitoring for a Chicago fit, with him specifically matching the left-shot profile Pope described as the most natural addition.
He's currently on the last year of his deal and will be unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.

Whether Davidson packages a young defenseman alone or combines one with the fourth overall pick in a larger splash move is the question that very well might define Chicago's entire summer.
Davidson said he has no idea what Toronto, San Jose, and Vancouver plan to do ahead of the Blackhawks at picks one through three, which means his planning involves multiple draft scenarios simultaneously.
