Insider Drops The Latest On Sebastian Cossa To Oilers Rumors

The word started emanating out on social media Monday night that Detroit Red Wings goaltender Sebastian Cossa was being traded to the Edmonton Oilers. One completely unsubstantiated rumor even threw around names like Isaac Howard and Darnell Nurse as potentially being involved.

Insiders are throwing cold water on that for now. Although Cossa is expected to be dealt at some point, Elliotte Friedman says everyone is getting a little too excited about all this, for right now.

"There's all these Cossa rumors going around now... I think Edmonton has some interest, and maybe it does happen, but this morning I was told it's nowhere near as far along as it's being portrayed," said Friedman on The Fan Hockey Show on Tuesday.

The Oilers, of course, have been linked to any and all goalies who come up on the rumor mill for the past couple of years, as their standing in the crease is once again up in the air going into next season.

Why is Sebastian Cossa on the trade block?

Cossa, the 6'6" netminder, is a restricted free agent, and spent his entire 2025-26 season at Grand Rapids in the AHL. He posted a .915 Sv% and 2.33 goals against average. He becomes waiver-eligible next season and the Red Wings don't want to risk losing him for nothing if they have to send him down again. Prospects like Trey Augustine and Michal Postava have entered the conversation, leaving Detroit with too many netminders and not enough NHL ice time.

Fellow insider Kevin Weekes has now thrown out another team with interest in the Wings' netminder:

Weekes says that Cossa could indeed be on the move, but he names the Utah Mammoth as a team to watch among other interested parties. They have only one NHL goalie under contract at this point.

Backup Vitek Vanecek is an unrestricted free agent, while Karel Vejmelka is the starter. Vanecek will almost certainly not be back, as he had a difficult season in Utah, to say the least. He posted a 5-13-3 record (on a team that was 10 games over .500), with an .883 save percentage. Vejmelka was once again the starter, and posted an impressive 38-20-3 mark with an .896 Sv%.

Besides, the Oilers are a little busy right now dealing with a controversial potential head coach hiring.
