Devils' Nico Hischier Linked To Montreal Canadiens As 'Perfect Fit'
The fit would be "beyond perfect," says a notable NHL insider. Could the Montreal Canadiens try to make a move for New Jersey Devils' center Nico Hischier this summer?
The Devils' top line center has one year remaining on his seven-year contract that carries a $7.25 million AAV. He's extension eligible as of July 1, and he'll be in for a nice raise in the new soaring salary cap environment.
According to insider Pierre LeBrun, league sources tell him that "there have been preliminary discussions on what an extension might look like, but the sides haven’t gotten to the heavy lifting. Some teams are paying very close attention."
He notes that the Montreal Canadiens would certainly be one of them, and would jump on the chance to make an offer to the Devils if it became apparent that he could be available.
To me, Hischier is the best fit for the Canadiens. And there’s no doubt the Habs are keeping super close tabs on that...Hischier is a left-handed Nick Suzuki. The fit is beyond perfect for Montreal if Hischier were ever actually available. I think the Canadiens would be willing to pay a real price and not mess around in that trade scenario.
Second-line center is a top priority for Habs GM Kent Hughes this summer. Of course, that's easier said than done in the NHL these days, as most of the league is looking to add a top-six pivot. The Habs have also been connected to the likes of Vincent Trocheck of the New York Rangers, and Mason McTavish of the Anaheim Ducks, a pair of 2Cs that are even more likely to be dealt this offseason than the Devils' main man.
Hischier recorded 28 goals this season with 66 points in 82 games, averaging 20:43 time on ice per night. In his nine years with the Devils, he has 199 goals and 488 points in 609 games.
He was taken first overall in the 2017 NHL Draft by New Jersey, 12 spots ahead of the Canadiens' current first-line center, Suzuki).
