Jonathan Toews' Pending Decision On His Future Is Revealed

Winnipeg Jets center Jonathan Toews

After missing three seasons over a five-year period, he never gave up the fight to make it back to the National Hockey League. But now it appears that three-time Stanley Cup champion Jonathan Toews is going to call it quits after just one season back with the Winnipeg Jets.

Insider Darren Dreger of TSN reported that, although it's not official yet, Toews is leaning towards retiring.

“High-level source says it’s more likely than not that the 38-year-old will officially retire from the National Hockey League," Dreger said on Insider Trading. "That's definitely the way he's leaning today."

The 38-year-old went through a lot, but was laser-focused on returning to play while recovering from a long-term battle with chronic inflammatory response syndrome (CIRS) and the lingering effects of long Covid.

It first hit him in 2020, and he missed the entire 2020-2021 NHL season and portions of the 2022-2023 season, before stepping away from the game for two years. He decided to come back for the 2025-26 season with his hometown team, the Winnipeg Jets.

"Talk about a real effort put in returning to the NHL, and he most definitely had his moments. The leadership qualities that Toews brought to the Winnipeg Jets dressing room, to the bench, on the ice, no doubt they were a real big asset to Scott Arniel and the overall team in Winnipeg," said Dreger.

He played all 82 games, an accomplishment in itself for Toews, and registered 11 goals and 18 assists for 29 points while averaging 14:29 of ice time a night.

He just turned 38 shortly after the end of the regular season.

Toews was a multi-time All-Star with the Chicago Blackhawks and was a core member of three Stanley Cup winners in the Windy City. He won the Conn Smythe trophy as the playoff MVP for the first of those three titles, in 2010.

We'll have to wait, however, for an official announcement on Toews' impending retirement.
