The deal is worth $20 million, with an AAV of $4M.
Dickinson, 31, was acquired by Edmonton from the Chicago Blackhawks at the trade deadline and did a nice job as their third-line checking center. He only had four points in 17 regular-season games with the Oilers, but his job as the 3C was to provide shutdown defense and penalty killing. He did that very well and has now been rewarded for it.
Oilers insider Bob Stauffer calls Dickinson a real 'gamer' and writes that he "willed himself to overcome a significant lower-body injury to play the final three games of the Anaheim series."
Dickinson was a first-round pick by the Dallas Stars in the 2013 NHL Draft, and spent the first six years of his career there. After a year in Vancouver, he spent three seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks and posted his one big offensive season there, with 22 goals in 2023-24.
That turned out to be an anomoly, as he went back to single-digit goals in the past two seasons, and has been in that range for 10 of his 11 NHL seasons. But again, he does what's needed on the defensive side of the puck, and has now earned himself another significant contract, following the expiration of his three-year, $4.25M AAV deal.
