NHL Trade: Kraken & Panthers Completing Deal For Mackie Samoskevich

The Florida Panthers needed to move off some money, and the Seattle Kraken are looking to bolster their offensive potential. With that, insider David Pagnotta is reporting that the two sides are completing a trade to send Mackie Samoskevich to Seattle.

The full trade looks like this:

The Panthers receive a first-round pick in this year's Draft (coming up this week), 25th overall, as well as a conditional second-rounder next year.

The former first-round pick, Samoskevich was drafted 24th overall in the 2021 NHL Draft, and just completed his second full season with the Panthers. He's a restricted free agent, coming off his entry-level deal.

He was projected by AFP Analytics to earn a $3 million AAV on his next contract, so this deal saves the Panthers that money, and gives them two more draft assets to put towards whatever else they might have up their sleeve this offseason (Connor Hellebuyck, perhaps??).

The 23-year-old's usage in Florida has been muted, however, due to their offensive depth, and he finished with 12 goals and 32 points in 77 games last season, while playing just 14:28 per night. He had a 15-goal year in his rookie season.

Samoskevich will be unleashed to do a lot more on the offensively starved Kraken. He comes with a "shooter's mentality," as noted by Seattle GM Jason Botterill.

“For me, there’s the fact that, at such a young age, he’s been able to win a Stanley Cup already, and he’s been a part of a very successful organization in Florida,” Botterill said. “I just love his age, love his speed and I love his shot. So, I think he’ll fit in very well with the style of play that we’re trying to play on an everyday basis here.”
