The Buffalo Sabres sent out Michael Kesselring in a trade on Wednesday, but that, apparently, might not be the last move made to their blueline this offseason.

According to insider Darren Dreger, the Sabres are talking with "multiple teams" about a potential Bowen Byram trade.

Make no mistake, the Sabres would love to keep their top-four D-man, but he's got just one year to run on his deal, and is eligible for an extension. If he doesn't want to sign, they must consider a trade. A report from insider Frank Seravalli on Thursday states that Byram sees himself as a No. 1 D-man and would like to find a team that can afford him that opportunity. With Rasmus Dahlin, that can't happen in Buffalo.

"This has nothing to do with money. This has nothing to do with (Buffalo the city or the team). Bowen Byram likes Buffalo, he likes his teammates. He likes the trajectory of the Sabres. This has everything to do with opportunity and a continual challenge, as I understand it, that exists within Bowen Byram," says Seravalli.

Byram sees himself as a No. 1 D-man, wants to get to a team that would allow him to be

"He sees himself as a No. 1 defenseman in the NHL. And watching him in these playoffs, it's hard to argue that's not the case.

"He's got this drumbeat (within himself) that says, 'I can be that guy.' I think he can, and other teams think he can. Now it's about getting him to a place where he can get the opportunity to prove it."

Byram would be an extremely valuable trade chip for the Sabres to add elsewhere on the roster. Even though he has another year to run on his deal, the bottom line is, they can’t keep him & let him walk for nothing next year.

This past season, Byram posted an 11-goal, 42-point campaign, with a +15 rating, in logging 22:20 of average ice time.
