NHL Rumors: Sergei Bobrovsky Seeking Huge Contract
Per Nick Kypreos of Sportsnet, Bobrovsky is seeking a six- or seven-year contract worth $42 million, a deal that would carry an annual value of $6 million to $7 million per season.
"They remain focused on re-signing pending UFA Sergei Bobrovsky, but they may have to start considering who his potential replacement might be if his extremely high demand on an extension doesn't come down," Kypreos said. "There are some suggestions that his ask is as high as $42 million over six or seven years."
Why the Term Is the Problem, Not the Money
The total dollar figure is not what concerns Florida.
The length is.
Bobrovsky will turn 38 in September, before the start of next season, which means a six- or seven-year deal would keep him under contract through his age-43 or age-44 season.
For a goaltender, committing to that kind of term is a massive organizational risk regardless of conditioning, and the Florida Panthers are not willing to go that far.

Bobrovsky is finishing up a seven-year, $70 million contract that carried a $10 million cap hit, a deal that produced three straight trips to the Stanley Cup Final and two championships in 2024 and 2025.
His 2025-26 season was a notable down year, and the Panthers explored a deadline trade that ultimately fell through when Carolina was unwilling to part with a first-round pick, per Pierre LeBrun.
Chris Johnston of The Athletic described the two sides as being at a stalemate in negotiations, noting Bobrovsky is a reasonable bet to play well into his 40s because of his exceptional conditioning and lateral mobility.
What Happens If He Leaves
Bobrovsky becomes a free agent July 1 and would immediately be one of the top goalies on the market.
The Edmonton Oilers are the team most frequently identified as his potential next destination, given their well-documented need to upgrade in net and the irony of Bobrovsky joining the franchise his Panthers beat in consecutive Cup Finals.

The Panthers have their entire core locked up long-term, with Aleksander Barkov, Aaron Ekblad, Gustav Forsling, and more all signed through at least 2030, making goaltending the one significant vacancy on an otherwise complete roster.
Bill Zito has stated his preference is to keep Bobrovsky as part of the franchise's core.
Whether that preference survives a $42 million asking price stretched across six or seven years is the question that will be fascinating to see answered.
