Shocking Team Linked To Jason Robertson, As Contract Ask Reaches Astronomical Proportions

We originally heard that Dallas Stars' restricted free agent Jason Robertson was looking for 'Mikko Rantanen money' on his next contract. That was suggesting a $12 million+ AAV would be needed.

But now we're getting a report from insiders Pierre LeBrun and David Pagnotta that Robertson's ask is soaring far past that, into astronomical proportions.

LeBrun told the crew on TSN Overdrive Monday that Robertson's contract ask would "open eyes." And probably have them bulging, if the Pagnotta report is true. The Fourth Period insider told the Coming In Hot podcast that the Ottawa Senators are hot to trot for Robertson.
They've had interest, I believe, going back to last summer. My understanding is that they have made it known to the Dallas Stars that they want to trade for this player. They are going back-and-forth, I believe with them ammo'ing up on draft picks. That's their No. 1 target.

If (a trade) doesn't happen by July 1, and he's not signed by the Stars, then I believe that the threat of an offer sheet (by Ottawa) is extremely real.

And when a $14 million AAV was suggested as a starting point for Ottawa to write into this potential offer sheet, Pagnotta replied, "I've got to imagine that the number might even be higher than that."

The Senators acquired the Nos. 9 and 25 picks in the Draft coming up on Friday in the Tkachuk trade, and they have seven first-rounders over the next four years. And they'll need them if they're serious about this offer sheet thing. The NHL's compensation threshold for an offer sheet north of an $11.9M AAV is four first-rounders. Whoa.

Insider Chris Johnston suggested on Monday that Robertson "would have no interest in signing a long-term deal in a place like Ottawa.”

Nevertheless, Pagnotta says they are pushing "hard" for Robertson, and "I’m led to believe they wouldn’t be going this hard if they didn’t think they could convince Robertson to sign with them.”

Stay tuned, the already wild NHL offseason is about to get even crazier.
