Flyers GM Danny Briere Speaks Out For 1st Time on Carlsson Offer Sheet Experience

There have been a lot of blockbuster moments in this wild NHL offseason, but the record-breaking $18 million AAV offer sheet that the Philadelphia Flyers signed Leo Carlsson to takes the cake. The ramifications it will have on the league's salary structure moving forward are astronomical.

As we all know by now, the Anaheim Ducks eventually did match the five-year, $90M offer sheet. Flyers GM Danny Briere spoke publicly today on a Zoom call with media about his eye-popping move for the first time.

He began by addressing the new Trevor Zegras four-year, $9.125M AAV extension, then went on to say that the Carlsson affair has proven that the Flyers are "serious" about building a sustainable winner.

It was noticed around the league. What I hope, too, is that it’s noticed by our fans and by our players, that we’re serious.

The players did their part last year. We’re trying to do ours. We’re going to keep trying to improve the team to give them the best chance to be a contender for years to come.

The mere fact that Carlsson chose the Flyers as the team to sign that offer sheet with, when there were seven or eight others that spoke to the Ducks center about signing, speaks to Briere's overall intention: Philly is being recognized as a desirable place and team right now.

And for those wondering whether the big re-signing of Zegras today was a result of the Carlsson attempt ultimately failing, he answered that quite clearly:

"The Leo Carlsson offer sheet and the Trevor Zegras offer sheet had nothing to do with each other. We wanted both on the team at the time we made the offer sheet."
“He cares about this team," Briere said of Zegras. "Even in this negotiation, he took charge. He’s the one that said, ‘I want to be in Philly. I love it here. I want to stay there.’

“That’s a big reason why this contract extension was done. Trevor was really involved and Trevor was adamant that he wanted to be in Philly."
