Red Wings Sign Viktor Arvidsson To Multi-Year Deal

The Detroit Red Wings are adding another veteran scorer, signing Viktor Arvidsson as they continue tweaking their forward group in free agency.

Per Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, Arvidsson is signing with Detroit on a two-year deal worth $5 million per season.

The 33-year-old winger was one of the more proven scoring options still available, and Detroit moved quickly to bring in a player who can help right away.

Arvidsson is coming off a strong season with the Boston Bruins, where he posted 25 goals and 29 assists for 54 points. His previous deal carried a $4 million cap hit, so this is a raise, but not by much.

Why Arvidsson Fits In Detroit

For the Red Wings, this is a pretty clear swing at adding more five-on-five scoring and veteran edge. Detroit finished 41-31-10 last season but missed the playoffs again, so adding a winger who can still score 20-plus goals makes sense for a team trying to stop living in the mushy middle.

Arvidsson is not a long-term core piece, but on a two-year deal, he gives Detroit a useful middle-six winger who can play with pace, shoot the puck, and help a team that needed more reliable offense around its younger pieces.
