Red Wings Trade For 6'8" Breakout Forward

While they continue their search for a new boss of hockey operations, the Detroit Red Wings are apparently still able to get some business done. Interim general manager Shawn Horcoff completed a nice trade on Thursday with the Nashville Predators for gigantic forward Sutter Muzzatti, who just completed his NCAA eligibility.

Muzzatti, whose height ranges from 6-foot-6 to 6-foot-8, depending on which source you use, had a breakout season in his 4th and final year of NCAA hockey. He posted 13 goals and 32 points in 37 games for Notre Dame.

He is said to have good hockey sense, soft hands and puck-handling for a big man, and a strong net-front presence (which would probably go without saying, at his size).

The physical forward was a 5th-round pick of the Predators in the 2023 NHL Draft, but was not interested in signing with the Preds following the conclusion of his college career. He remained on Nashville's “reserve list" after the Aug. 15 deadline rather than becoming a UFA.

Now, the 23-year-old is on the move to Detroit, and has inked a two-year entry-level deal with his new club.

His father, Jason Muzzatti, was a Canadian-born goalie who played in the NHL for five seasons from 1993-98. In 62 games total for the Hartford Whalers, Calgary Flames, NY Rangers and SJ Sharks, the 6'2" netminder posted a career .894 save percentage.

As for Sutter Muzzatti, the Michigan-born behemoth returns to his home state, and will undoubtedly get his professional journey underway this coming season at the AHL level, with the Grand Rapids Griffins.

Detroit sends the old standby, future considerations, to Nashville in return.
