Canucks' Elias Pettersson Ready To Move On From Trade Talks

Elias Pettersson is ready for a new chapter in Vancouver.

The Canucks veteran forward spoke to the media on Monday as training camps unofficially opened, and it became obvious very quickly that Pettersson isn't worried about the recent trade rumors, and is ready to move on, and focus in on getting himself into the best form possible.

Pettersson cites a strong relationship with Canucks' general manager Ryan Johnson as a big help so far. “No, it means a lot. I mean, RJ is someone I’ve known for a long time, and he’s always been a good guy for me. And it’s been good just talking about the future, what he wants to see from me, and he makes you feel good. I play my best when I just feel like myself, but he’s been good in that regard, and he just wants the best from you and wants everyone to be happy.”

Pettersson, 27, is signed through the 2032 season at $11.6 million AAV and owns a full no-trade clause. Last season in 74 games, the former first-round pick led Vancouver in scoring with 51 points, while playing close to 19 minutes per night. 

Pettersson feels there's a new vibe to the culture with Brendan Gallagher and Luke Schenn joining forces. “I know Luke from the past. He’s such a good guy, and a lot of battles with Gallagher throughout the years, but it’s been really good spending time with them now and practicing with them. So yeah, I’m excited. “Just be myself. Practice hard, play hard. Be vocal when I feel I want to be it, but yeah, I’m just excited to play hockey again… Me, Brock, and Demmer have been there the longest, so it’s up to us to set the standard of work and all those things.”

As far as trade talks go, things are awfully quiet now, however, if the Canucks once again struggle this season and Pettersson is in the middle of it all, look for the trade rumors to pick back up again. The Pittsburgh Penguins and Carolina Hurricanes have been linked in the past.
