Latest Report On Red Wings GM Search A Real Head-Scratcher

The Detroit Red Wings' search for a new head of hockey operations and/or general manager continues to drag on.  We heard earlier this week that one of the leading candidates had pulled his name from the running. Training camp opens in a week and there's still no one in place. 

But the latest head-scratcher comes to us from insider Frank Seravalli, speaking on The Fan Morning Show this week. 

I don't have the slightest clue who this person is going to be. The names that have been reported and connected to this search, some of them haven't even gotten interviewed. The Red Wings called and asked for permission to speak to some of these candidates, and then never interviewed them. I really don't know what's happening there.

Fellow insider Elliotte Friedman echoed the same intel on 32 Thoughts Thursday morning. 

The Wings' stated goal of having a new man in place by Labor Day has come and gone, and the craziest thing is that Detroit has more huge outstanding things to take care of on the player side than pretty much any other team in the league:

Top restricted free agent Simon Edvinsson is still without a contract for the new season. Extension talks are on hold, though he does say he'll be at training camp.

And oh yes, there's this little matter of captain Dylan Larkin wanting a trade out of town. That's been on their to-do list since last season ended. 

Assistant GM Shawn Horcoff continues to act in an interim role, but he does not have the authority to make massive moves like the aforementioned ones. And another report indicates that he is no longer a finalist to get the full-time job.

"Steve Yzerman... was relieved of his job on July 2nd. It's (over two months later). I've never seen anything like this, in terms of how long this has gone on," Seravalli said.
