Lightning's Extension Offer To Kucherov Revealed

The future of Nikita Kucherov is not going to be in Tampa Bay. But whether that move takes place this season or in the summer remains to be seen. Despite his trade request bombshell, the Bolts have said they would 'unequivocally' NOT be trading their Hart Trophy winner.

So why did it come to this? The 33-year-old pending UFA is in the final season of his eight-year deal with a $9.5 million AAV. After seeing the $20.4 million salary handed to Cale Makar on his new extension, and the $18.8M for Macklin Celebrini, Kucherov figures he certainly belongs in that type of category. But the Lightning apparently don't.

David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period reports that the negotiations "never came close" to an agreement, and that Tampa came in with a four-year, $15 million AAV offer to Kucherov's camp. It was obviously rejected.

That Lightning offer came in at $5.8 million below the $20.8 million maximum, based on the rule that a player's individual cap hit can be up to 20% of the team salary cap at the time the contract is signed.

Chris Johnston reported that Kuch was seeking a six-year deal with an AAV in the range of $20 million, per league sources.

In the end, however, this will not be a Dylan Larkin or Connor Hellebuyck situation. Kucherov will not be withholding his services from the Lightning while his trade demand sits out there. At least that's what his agent said this morning:

Dan Milstein confirmed to insider Pierre LeBrun that Kucherov will be playing in today's game against the Nashville Predators, and will not be sitting out any games: “Of course,” said Milstein. “He loves playing hockey. He will play while I will take care of the business side going forward.”

We'll see how long that pledge holds up. It should certainly make for an interesting dynamic around the club as Kucherov has already told his teammates that he wants a trade.
