NHL Trade Rumors: Sabres pushing for 3-way trade with Jets, Rangers
The NHL's goalie market is an interesting place, as Connor Hellebuyck continues to sit around waiting for a trade to materialize, meanwhile in New York, the Rangers lost Igor Shesterkin for the season. In Buffalo, the Sabres have been trying for months to acquire Hellebuyck, but there's been some speculation that a big hold up in talks is that Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen has the Jets on his no-trade clause, which covers five teams.
What's come up in the last few days? It sounds like UPL doesn't have the Rangers on his no-fly zone, and the Sabres have been pushing hard to advance trade talks to send UPL to New York, while they'd receive Hellebuyck from Winnipeg.
Hellebuyck may return to Winnipeg at some point this week, which is the absolutely worst case scenario for many involved. Several Jets have confirmed it feels like Hellebuyck turned his back on them, and the franchise, and frankly, Canada as well for that matter. Hellebuyck apparently has no interest in playing in Montreal or Edmonton, even though both teams had interest. For now, it appears the Sabres via a 3-way deal carries a ton of potential, or the Carolina Hurricanes/Utah Mammoth swoop in.
As far as contracts go, UPL is owed $4.75 million AAV for two more seasons, which isn't necessarily ideal for the Rangers. Dylan Garand is currently starting and doing well, meanwhile Shesterkin returns next season, and backup goalie Joonas Korpisalo will be back in the coming weeks, and is owed $3 million, this season and next. GM Chris Drury would need to receive quite the trade sweetener to help facilitate this deal and take on UPL for his crease, who hasn't necessarily been lighting it up for the Sabres this season, posting a .812 save percentage in his first four games.
We shall see how far the Sabres can push trade talks, and if they can provide the Rangers, and Jets with what they're looking for asset wise to finalize this blockbuster. Hellebuyck would love to be a Sabre, we just have to wait and see if trade talks can cross the finish line between these three clubs.
Someone actually created a website called https://t.co/XHBL7n5bCo that tracks how much money Connor Hellebuyck is losing during his suspension 😭 And yes, it updates every second 💸 https://t.co/0KNPZp2uCj
