Report: Kraken Blockbuster Trade Idea Emerges For Simon Edvinsson

The Seattle Kraken have emerged as a possible landing spot for Detroit Red Wings defenseman Simon Edvinsson, and one insider is already floating a name that could make a deal work.

David Pagnotta said on Tuesday's Morning Cuppa Hockey that Seattle is a team he believes has interest in "a guy like Simon Edvinsson," and he wondered aloud whether the Kraken would "utilize a guy like Shane Wright in a package for him."

He added that he was "trying to connect some dots here," so the Wright part is Pagnotta thinking out loud, not a report that Seattle has offered Wright or that the two teams have discussed a framework like that.

Pagnotta also said on The Sheet Podcast that he's "very curious" about the Kraken, along with a few other teams, as clubs poke around on Edvinsson.

Edvinsson Is Unsigned And Reportedly Wants Out

Edvinsson, 23, is an unsigned restricted free agent who went back to Sweden to skate with Frolunda while his contract stalemate with Detroit drags on, and Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported Saturday that the word around the league is that he prefers a trade.

Friedman also made clear that the team and the agents aren't talking, and that the Red Wings have told other clubs their priority is still to sign him.

The disagreement is mostly about term, with Pagnotta reporting that Edvinsson is seeking a maximum seven-year deal worth between $9 million and $11 million a year while Detroit has pushed for something shorter.

Detroit has roughly $17 million in cap space this season, so room isn't what's holding things up, and the Red Wings are already dealing with Dylan Larkin's trade request on top of this.

Edvinsson was the sixth overall pick in 2021, stands 6-foot-6 and 222 pounds, and has 60 points in 175 NHL games.

What A Wright Package Would Mean For Both Sides

Wright is 22, was the fourth overall pick in 2022, and carries an $886,666 cap hit in the final year of his entry-level contract, after which he becomes a restricted free agent without arbitration rights.

Friedman said in September that Wright is "definitely out there and there definitely is interest," but that the Kraken want his potential "rewarded in any kind of trade."

Pagnotta has said Seattle wants Wright to be part of a much bigger move rather than moving him for the sake of it, and Friedman said Monday he thinks Edmonton "poked around" on Wright but doesn't believe a deal will happen.

Seattle has about $17.6 million in cap space, per PuckPedia, which is enough to absorb an Edvinsson contract in the range Pagnotta described.

It's easy to see why a young player who can play center and wing would appeal to Detroit, which could lose Larkin.
