Oilers and Maple Leafs discussing trade

The Edmonton Oilers have been looking for scoring help for most of the season. The trade deadline is a little over a month away and Darren Dreger of TSN reported during the intermission of the Leafs and Flames game last night that Leafs GM Kyle Dubas and Oiler GM Ken Holland have held talks that would look to address both teams needs. The Maple Leafs are missing their top 2 defenders in Jake Muzzin and Morgan Rielly, Dubas will need to address this issue if the Maple Leafs are going to make the post season.

The Leafs forwards that Ken Holland would most likely be interested in would be Alex Kerfoot, Kasperi Kapanen and Andreas Johnsson. Both teams are tight against the salary cap, so any deal would have to be close to dollar for dollar. All three Leafs make $3.2 - $3.5 million per season and all three have multiple years left after this one.

Kyle Dubas would no doubt like Oiler Defenseman Darnell Nurse, but there is no chance that Ken Holland parts with him. That leaves defensemen Matt Benning, Kris Russell and Adam Larsson. Both Russell and Larsson have one year left after this season at about $4 million each, Benning will be a RFA this summer, he currently makes $1.9 million and is due for a bump in pay. All three defensemen play the right side in Edmonton, with Larsson and Benning being right handed shots.

The main targets for Dubas and Holland most likely are Kapanen and Larsson respectively. These two players would fill the needs the best for both the Oilers and Maple Leafs. There could be some bottom six players thrown in as well, just to balance the cap situation. Holland and Dubas are expected to be active leading up to the February 24th Trade Deadline.
