Ducks GM Gives Update on Ryan Getzlaf's Future

Anaheim Ducks general manager Bob Murray doesn't want this season to be considered 'lost' and was happy with a lot of his younger core. He also knows he has a decision to make when it comes to captain Ryan Getzlaf and Murray admitted him and the long-time Duck have held conversations about what Getzlaf's role will be next season.

At 36-years-old Getzlaf isn't the player he once was, but he can still be a productive piece if he's used in the right situation. Murray met with the media to discuss how exactly that may look in 2021:
He's obviously at the point in his career where he needs to take a little step back and see what's best for his family and what he thinks his role can be. We discussed roles on the hockey team. Ryan and I discussed a whole bunch of things, and we will continue to have discussions

Getzlaf is coming off a contract that saw him make over $8.2 million per season. He's not going to demand this type of money considering he recorded just 17 points in 48 games last season.

The Ducks have over $22 million in cap space next season and it's likely 'Getzy' comes in around the $4-5 million mark at most. This gives the Ducks some money to spend and Murray could fast track the rebuild if he likes. It's going to come down to who is out there on the trade and free-agent markets. One name who won't be is Ryan Getzlaf.
