Minnesota Wild: 3 Players With Expiring Contracts

With the off-season almost completed, it feels right to take a preview into next year's. In this segment, we will be looking at three players from each team who have expiring contracts. Both restricted and unrestricted free agents are eligible for discussion.

In this piece, let's take a look at the Minnesota Wild. Right now, they are working on re-signing Kirill Kaprizov and it's been quite challenging. However, next summer will also be a busy one for the Wild, as a few more key players who have expiring contracts.

Kevin Fiala LW (RFA): The Wild signed Kevin Fiala to a one-year deal this summer, so they will once again have to re-sign him next off-season. Fiala had a very solid year this past season, as he scored 20 goals and recorded 40 points in 50 games. Although he is a restricted free agent yet again, he will be eligible to be an unrestricted free agent in 2023. Therefore, a long-term for Fiala would be the correct call if they don't want to risk losing him. The 25-year-old winger keeps getting better, so they should keep him around.

Jordan Greenway LW (RFA): Jordan Greenway is another RFA who the Wild will have to deal with next summer. He just had the best offensive season of his career, too. In 56 games, he scored six goals and had 32 points. The 6'6" winger is somebody who they definitely should want to keep around, as he plays a very physical game and contributes on the scoresheet. He will likely be expecting a raise from his current $2.1 million cap hit.

Nico Sturm C (UFA): Nico Sturm played his first full year with the Minnesota Wild this past season. In 51 games, he scored 11 goals and recorded 17 points in a bottom-six role. They have a tough decision when it comes to him, as he will be eligible for unrestricted free agency next summer. If he puts together another season like that, he could get a decent paycheck if he hits the open market and may explore it because of that. Furthermore, he also is capable of playing on the penalty kill, so he is effective in multiple ways.
