NHL Rumors: Red Wings Shopping Veteran Goaltender

According to Dan Rosen of NHL.com, the Detroit Red Wings are likely to trade goaltender Thomas Greiss before the deadline passes.

At this juncture of the campaign, the Red Wings trail the Boston Bruins by 12 points for the second Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference. Their chances of catching them at not particularly high at this point, so they are expected to be sellers. With Greiss being 36 years old and having an expiring contract, he is one of their notable rental candidates.

Greiss could be a decent backup goaltender for a playoff team looking to get stronger at the position. The struggling New Jersey Devils could even look to acquire him, as it's been reported that they are looking to acquire a goaltender for the short term due to both MacKenzie Blackwood and Jonathan Bernier being out long term.

In 19 appearances this campaign, Greiss has an 8-8-1 record, 3.23 goals-against average, and .900 save percentage. It's been a bit of a down year for him, as he just sported a .912 save percentage and 2.70 goals-against average last season with Detroit.

It will be interesting to see if Greiss gets moved before the deadline. With his contract expiring and the Red Wings still rebuilding, it wouldn't hurt to get a draft pick for him.
