Chicago Blackhawks Rumors: 3 Favorites to Acquire Jonathan Toews

Chicago Blackhawks forward Jonathan Toews is currently battling an illness and has been placed on IR by the team, retroactive to February 7th. While this is certainly a story to watch, expect to see Toews' name amid trade rumors these next few weeks as the Blackhawks captain is expected to be moved, should he be healthy enough to return to the lineup this season. Here's three teams who are currently the favorites:

Colorado Avalanche

If you're a center with Stanley Cup Playoff experience, the Avalanche have likely kicked tires on a potential trade. General manager Joe Sakic is looking to add a talented pivot for either the team's second or third line and Toews fits the bill perfectly. Money will be an issue here so the Blackhawks will likely need to retain half of Toews' $10.5 million cap hit for the rest of this season. Don't expect the return to be as significant as you think.

Washington Capitals

The Caps are looking to add up front and basically have been trolling the trade waters to find the best available player who won't cost a ton to acquire. Toews is battle tested and has the winning pedigree the Capitals are looking for. Ideally the Capitals add a winger before the deadline, however with Lars Eller struggling of late, look for Washington to make a trade offer to Chicago.

Edmonton Oilers

While the Oilers appear very interested in acquiring Erik Karlsson of the San Jose Sharks, they also have interest in adding a third-line center. Toews would provide them with a shut-down center who could help their bottom six and penalty kill. This would also allow for Ryan Nugent-Hopkins to move up the lineup and be given more playing time, which is something he deserves.
