NHL Rumors: Nikolaj Ehlers Expected To Be "Shopped & Likely Moved By NHL Draft"

As the NHL Draft approaches, the Winnipeg Jets are poised for significant roster adjustments this summer, with forward Nikolaj Ehlers at the forefront of trade discussions.

Ehlers, who has one year left on his contract before becoming an unrestricted free agent, carries an average annual value of $6 million.

Despite his undeniable skill and recent full 82-game season performance, concerns about his injury history and long-term affordability are pushing the Jets to explore trade opportunities.

Murat Ates of The Athletic reports that Ehlers is likely to be dealt soon, even as soon as the NHL Draft on June 28-29, as Winnipeg looks to free up cap space and possibly strengthen their defensive lines or acquire a coveted first-round draft pick.

This past season, the 28-year-old recorded 25 goals and 36 assists for 61 total points across 82 games played.

The decision to shop Ehlers is part of a larger strategy by the Jets to balance securing core players with addressing critical team needs within budget constraints.

With a 10-team no-trade clause, Ehlers holds some control over his potential destinations, complicating the trade negotiations. However, the Jets are determined to navigate these complexities effectively to ensure they receive substantial returns that align with their long-term vision and immediate roster needs.

Over his nine-year career, spent entirely with the Jets, Ehlers has 201 goals and 256 assists for a total of 457 points across 605 games played. Photo Credit: Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports
